PUERTO PRINCESA, PALAWAN—Informal Waste Collectors (IWC) in Puerto Princesa, known locally as Eco-Warriors, have received a significant boost to their operational capacity with the distribution of personalized Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This initiative, spearheaded by Eco Kolek and supported by the USAID Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO) program, is a critical step in professionalizing the informal recycling sector and fortifying the battle against plastic pollution.

Co-Creation and Ownership

A defining feature of this project is the direct involvement of the Eco-Warriors in the design process. They contributed to the conceptualization and sketching of the new uniform designs, ensuring the gear meets their practical needs and aesthetic preferences. This hands-on ownership transforms the uniform from a mere garment into a symbol of pride and professionalism.

Ester, a dedicated Eco-Warrior, encapsulated the sentiment, exclaiming, "I look beautiful in this uniform!"—a simple but powerful statement affirming the newfound dignity and self-esteem derived from the professional attire.

A Dual Investment in Safety and Stigma Reduction

Beyond aesthetics, the customized PPE serves as an essential line of defense. The gear, which represents the second set provided through USAID CCBO, is designed to enhance the health and safety of the Eco-Warriors during their daily collection missions, mitigating risks and enabling them to carry out their duties with enhanced confidence.

Each complete set includes:

  • Four pairs of durable uniforms

  • Four face masks

  • A pair of comfortable shoes

  • Two sets of protective gloves

  • A branded USAID tumbler

This investment is fundamentally strategic: it professionalizes the visibility of the Eco-Warriors, helping to effectively reduce the social stigma often associated with waste collection while recognizing them as essential environmental service providers.

Project Zacchaeus' Eco Kolek remains committed to equipping and empowering these frontline environmental guardians. This ongoing journey of transformation and resilience is made possible through the steadfast support of USAID, the unwavering commitment of the Puerto Princesa Local Government Unit (LGU), and a host of valuable partners, all united in the shared goal of achieving cleaner landscapes and bluer oceans.
