PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — More than 96 kilos of plastic and assorted waste were collected during a coastal cleanup held along the Sabang shoreline in Barangay Cabayugan, an area that serves as the main docking point for boats entering the Puerto Princesa Underground River.
The activity, initiated by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO), forms part of the annual Subaraw Biodiversity Festival, which commemorates the Puerto Princesa Underground River’s inclusion in the New Seven Wonders of Nature.
Eco Kolek and its Eco Warriors participated in the cleanup along with personnel from the City ENRO, representatives of the Barangay Cabayugan local government unit, and several community residents. PEMSEA (Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia) joined as one of the event partners.
Eco Kolek representatives emphasized that cleanup activities in high-traffic coastal areas such as Sabang help prevent solid waste from entering the marine ecosystem. City ENRO officials likewise underscored the importance of continuous collaboration among organizations, barangays, and local stakeholders to sustain environmental protection initiatives beyond festival-related events.
Barangay officials expressed appreciation for the participation of local volunteers and partner organizations, noting that consistent waste management practices remain essential to preserving the area’s ecological integrity, particularly given its role as a tourism entry point.
The collected waste will undergo proper sorting and disposal in accordance with existing environmental regulations.
