PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, PALAWAN—A productive coordination meeting was held on September 23, 2025, bringing together the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Barangay Sicsican, its dedicated Eco-Warriors, and the PZC-Eco Kolek team. Led by Honorable Barangay Councilor Rhoy Dalumpines, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment, the gathering successfully reinforced the Eco-Warriors program and fostered a renewed commitment to addressing the barangay’s urgent waste management and sustainability concerns.
A Unified Front for a Cleaner Community
The meeting served as a powerful demonstration of shared commitment. Councilor Dalumpines emphasized that addressing environmental challenges is most effective when local officials, community volunteers, and partner organizations work hand-in-hand. This unified effort not only strengthens the Eco-Warriors program but cultivates a stronger sense of collective responsibility across the barangay.
During the session, Councilor Dalumpines provided updates on the current state of the Circular Economy Learning Hub and encouraged the active Eco-Warriors by sharing news regarding potential inclusion in government financial assistance programs. This was a clear message that active participation in environmental initiatives, particularly those focused on waste disposal and solid waste management, is highly valued and supported by the LGU.
Tackling Critical Challenges
The discussions were grounded in the realities of Barangay Sicsican, which faces several pressing waste management issues, including:
Irregular garbage collection in areas inaccessible to standard collection trucks.
The issue of improper disposal of dead animal carcasses.
A shortage of trash bins and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to adequately serve the barangay’s 27,000 residents across 19 puroks (only 8 puroks currently have MRFs).
To combat these challenges, Councilor Dalumpines reinforced the importance of enforcing existing ordinances, such as "Tapat Ko, Linis Ko" (My Frontage, My Cleanliness).
Barangay-Led Initiatives Moving Forward
The LGU presented several proactive initiatives underway to improve services:
New Infrastructure: Distribution of eight (8) new garbage racks across different puroks. * Program Reactivation: The formal reactivation of the Eco-Warriors program and the Oplan Linis cleanup program.
Operational Support: Deployment of a barangay truck dedicated to waste management needs.
The collaboration with Eco Kolek continues to be a crucial component, providing expertise and fresh perspectives. The meeting also offered a valuable opportunity for the newest members of the Eco Kolek staff to formally introduce themselves to the Eco-Warriors, strengthening personal connections and laying the groundwork for effective collaboration on future environmental programs.
With strong LGU support, the energy of the Eco-Warriors, and the partnership with Eco Kolek, Barangay Sicsican is making significant strides toward sustainable waste management for all its residents.
