Project Trial Run Excites the Eco-Warriors

Clad in their newly issued uniforms and equipped with vehicles provided through USAID’s Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO) Program, the Eco-Warriors experienced for the first time what it means to be part of a professionalized and organized system of waste collection. For many of them, this was not only a new job but also an opportunity to restore dignity and pride in the work they had been doing informally for years.

The Eco Kolek Project launched its first trial run, giving the Eco-Warriors a taste of what lies ahead once full operations begin. In just three days, 5.4 tons of used paper from a local printing press were successfully collected by six dedicated Eco-Warriors—marking an inspiring start to their journey as community champions of waste management.

The trial run gave them more than just hands-on practice—it opened their eyes to the life-changing potential of the Eco Kolek initiative. “Nakita namin kung gaano kalaki ang maitutulong ng proyekto sa amin at sa aming pamilya,” shared one Eco-Warrior. The activity allowed them to imagine a better future, where their work is respected, their families are supported, and their role as protectors of the environment is recognized by the wider community.

Project Zacchaeus leaders emphasized that this trial run is only the beginning. Once the project officially launches, Eco Kolek will expand its operations to cover more households, businesses, and communities across Puerto Princesa. This will not only strengthen waste collection systems but also create a ripple effect of empowerment—turning Eco-Warriors into visible role models of environmental stewardship.

The success of this trial has sparked renewed motivation among the team. With smiles on their faces and hope in their hearts, the Eco-Warriors are now more eager than ever to take on the challenge of scaling up the project. As they prepare for the next steps, one thing is certain: the Eco Kolek Project is not just about collecting waste—it’s about collecting dreams, dignity, and a cleaner future for the people of Puerto Princesa.
