Project Zacchaeus (PZC) and the Eco-Kolek program recently convened a critical session focused on Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) for the Eco Warriors of Barangay Sicsican. The training, held on November 6, 2025, aimed to equip waste workers with a deeper understanding of inclusivity and their rights under Philippine law.

Facilitated by PZC Operations Officer Dennis Creach S. Barcelona, the session, titled "Session 14 - GEDSI with Philippine Laws," addressed systemic barriers faced by marginalized groups, including women and persons with disabilities (PWDs). The training underscored that inclusivity is integral to community development and environmental sustainability.

Empowerment Through Legal Awareness

A key component of the training involved educating the Eco Warriors on relevant national legislation. Mr. Barcelona highlighted the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710), emphasizing its role in protecting women from discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities in the workforce. This is particularly relevant for the Eco-Kolek program, which actively engages women in the traditionally male-dominated waste management sector.

The session also reinforced the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003), framing waste segregation not just as a task, but as a civic responsibility that fosters community health and resilience.

Building an Inclusive Workforce

The training successfully connected the principles of GEDSI to the daily operations of the Eco Warriors. Participants engaged in discussions about how to apply fairness and respect in their interactions with residents and colleagues, ensuring that the benefits of the circular economy reach all members of the community equitably.

By integrating social inclusion with environmental mandates, the session strengthened the capacity of the Eco Warriors to serve as agents of both ecological protection and social equity in Puerto Princesa.
