PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — Waste workers operating under the Eco-Kolek program completed a comprehensive refresher course on October 17, 2025, focused on reinforcing occupational safety and professional conduct standards. The training was conducted for the Eco Warriors, the front-line community collectors, to ensure consistent adherence to work practices.
The four-hour program, structured across two segments, addressed both physical safety and peer leadership.
Safety and Wellness
The first segment centered on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and personal wellness. Facilitators led drills and discussions on wearing and removing gear correctly, underscoring the importance of protective items such as gloves, masks, and vests.
During a structured feedback session, participants reported significant gaps in protective equipment, stating that essential items had been worn out or lost due to daily use and recent weather events. This finding highlights a functional need for PPE replacement to maintain safety compliance during field operations.
The session also incorporated training on managing workplace stress, providing practical techniques related to hydration, stretching, and breathing exercises.
Professionalism and Leadership
The second segment focused on developing professional conduct and peer mentorship. Participants engaged in roleplaying and simulation activities covering professional traits, teamwork, and problem-solving scenarios, such as managing miscommunication during collection routes.
Discussions introduced the concept of "servant leadership," emphasizing the role of experienced Eco Warriors in mentoring new members and setting conduct standards through personal example. The course concluded with participants formalizing a public pledge to maintain standards of safety and professionalism.
The post-activity assessment noted a marked increase in participant engagement and communication skills compared to their initial training, indicating progress in group cohesion and professional confidence among the waste management workforce.
