PUERTO PRINCESA, PALAWAN – On June 17, 2023, the Eco Kolek initiative, facilitated through Project Zacchaeus, was honored to host Mr. Michael Schiffer, Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Asia. The visit culminated in the ceremonial turnover of new collection vehicles and professional uniforms to the dedicated Eco-Warriors.
This key initiative, supported by the USAID-funded Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO) program, is a strategic move to immediately enhance the professional image of the Eco-Warriors while directly addressing the stigma, as well as the critical health and safety concerns associated with their work.
Witnessing Grassroots Empowerment
During his visit, Assistant Administrator Schiffer engaged directly with the Eco-Warriors. He observed their meticulous process of sorting and storing collected recyclables and gained firsthand insight into their day-to-day collection system. Most importantly, he witnessed the demonstrable leadership qualities and personal empowerment that the project has fostered.
Project Eco Kolek focuses on supporting and equipping 60 informal waste collectors in Barangay Bancao-Bancao. Its primary objective is to create opportunities for these individuals to grow both personally and professionally, empowering them to utilize their voices, knowledge, and skills to advocate for sustainable waste management practices within their own communities.
Professionalizing a Vital Service
By providing official uniforms and dependable collection vehicles, USAID and Project Zacchaeus aim to:
Professionalize Appearance: Improve operational efficiency and elevate the Eco-Warriors' standing as essential community service providers.
Address Stigma: Recognize and legitimize the critical role informal waste collectors play in waste management and recycling.
Enhance Safety: Mitigate potential risks by providing standard safety equipment and reliable transport.
Assistant Administrator Schiffer's visit underscores the profound importance of recognizing and investing in grassroots efforts. By empowering individuals at the community level and providing them with necessary resources, projects like Eco Kolek and CCBO significantly contribute to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and ultimately, a cleaner and healthier Puerto Princesa for all.
